TLC ADDRESSES “WATERFALLS” COLLABORATION WITH JAPANESE POP STAR NAMIE AMURO

(Atlanta, GA) MTV VMAJ 2013 honored iconic girl group TLC with the “Legend Award” on Saturday, June 22, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Fans across the country tuned in across various time zones to catch the group accepting the award, and taking the stage to perform a medley of their most-requested hits. In addition to receiving the award, the group released a special Japan 20th anniversary edition of select songs including, a re-make of their 1995 chart-topping single “Waterfalls” featuring Japanese pop star Namie Amuro.

“It is an extreme honor for us to accept this award. The last person to receive the “Legend Award” was Michael Jackson back in 2006. We are humbled and so thankful to our Japanese fans who have continued to support TLC over the years,” Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins says. Although the “Waterfalls” re-make received rave reviews, and was instantly a top ten single-several media outlets reported negative commentary from the family of Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes, because of her absence on the record. “Our re-make of “Waterfalls” was a tribute to our sister Lisa, who actually co-wrote “Waterfalls” with Marqueze Etheridge. We don’t own the Master recording rights to Lisa’s raps on any of our music, and our requests to gain the rights so far have been denied. With the Japanese anniversary edition, we were forced to use creative ways to honor Lisa’s memory and celebrate this milestone with our fans,” Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas explains. “Lisa met Namie with us back in 1999 and she knew how much of a TLC fan Namie is; we were also impressed with how talented she is as a solo artist. Lisa being one of the most creative people I have ever met, would’ve been the first to have other talented artists covering our music. It is a tribute to her memory, and one I know she would appreciate,” Tionne “T-boz” Watkins continues. “Our management reached out to Ron Lopes prior to the record being released, to let him know that Namie would be performing to “Lisa’s” lyrics. We have and always will protect our sister’s legacy as TLC consists of the three of us collectively. Although we have and will collaborate with other artists, there will never be a replacement for Lisa or any members in TLC.”

TLC will make their first U.S. performance in years at the Mixtape Festival 2013 presented by VH1 on July 27th in Hershey, PA. They will also celebrate the release of their upcoming VH1 biopic; CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, in October 2013. The partnership with Viacom shows T-Boz and Chilli stepping into the role of executive producers for the film. TLC lovers can also expect highly anticipated new music, additional tour dates and more surprises from the legendary group.
